The new CEO of Xbox, Asha Shar, has confirmed what has long been rumored: the next-generation Xbox console will not only play Xbox games but also PC games. This next-generation console is codenamed “Project Helix,” and we will no doubt hear quite a bit about it over the next couple ofyears. While no release date has been announced (or even hinted at), I believe the earliest we will see the next Xbox (and the PS6, for that matter) is 2028.

Asha posted this to her Twitter account and said the following:

“Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!”

It has long been rumored that the next-generation Xbox will incorporate Steam, making it easy to play not only your Xbox games, but your entire Steam library on your console. While no marketplace was specifically mentioned in Asha’s announcement, this seems like a no-brainer. The interesting thing is whether this could expand to other marketplaces, such as the Epic Games Store or Good Old Games (GOG).

Only time will tell of course but the possibilities are exciting. What would you like to see in Microsoft’s next Xbox console?
