One of the big rumors swirling on the internet for the last few months is that Nintendo was developing a remake of its iconic title, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Earlier today, during their showcase, Nintendo confirmed all of those rumors by releasing a teaser trailer. This trailer showcases the first few moments of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time when Link is sleeping in his hut and is then woken up.
The original version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released on November 23, 1998. It went on to be the highest-rated game of all time, sitting at a 99 out of 100 on Metacritic. The game is beloved by just about everyone and was a key pillar of the Nintendo 64 console.
Now, almost 30 years later, a remake is on the horizon. How does Nintendo go about remaking a game with near universal acclaim? It can’t be easy, but the answer is at least a couple of months away. The unfortunate thing about today’s reveal is the lack of gameplay footage, but if it looks like the brief part we saw in the teaser, gamers are in for a treat when The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrives later this year.
Interestingly enough, Nintendo says it is coming in 2026. This means the Ocarina of Time Remake will either arrive later this summer or during the holiday season. Over the past week, we have seen many showcases where big games for the rest of 2026 have announced their release dates. So far, everyone is avoiding the November timeframe to avoid GTA VI. Whether Nintendo actually does this remains to be seen. I think this Ocarina of Time Remake could absolutely stand up to GTA VI. To be clear, it won’t affect GTA VI’s sales, but I don’t think it would get completely obliterated by it either, the way some other games would. It will be interesting to see what approach Nintendo takes, as September and October are now really crowded, with almost everyone (so far) wanting to release their game before Rockstar’s behemoth arrives.
In the meantime, check out the reveal trailer below and tell us what you think on Bluesky and Twitter. Are you excited for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? If you don’t already own a Nintendo Switch 2, will you buy one to play this anticipated remake?
