This is a sad day in the gaming industry as iconic studio BioWare has announced that they are closing. EA was recently acquired by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, alongside tech investment firm Silver Lake and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners. Once those people got involved, people feared something like this might happen and, unfortunately, it is now a reality.

Over the years BioWare created iconic franchises such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Anthem, and Mass Effect. For the past few years, they had been hard at work developing the next chapter in the Mass Effect series. Unfortunately, it seems like that game has been cancelled.

One sliver of hope remains and that is that EA sells off their IP they no longer want. How awesome would it be if someone like CD Projekt Red acquired the Mass Effect franchise? What if Larian was given Dragon Age? Imagine what could happen with these games and franchises with new ownership. The chances of this happening are slim but one can hope, right?

For me personally, I love the Mass Effect series. All three games were absolutely fantastic, along with the choice you were given at the end of Mass Effect 3. I remember that being the first franchise I had personally played where your decisions had weight behind them and actual consequences. As such everyone’s journey was a little bit different and that was really amazing. Mass Effect started out as an Xbox exclusive but then once EA bought BioWare it eventually arrived on other platforms as well.

The post from BioWare announcing their closure is below. Take a look at it and then tell us what you think on Bluesky and Twitter. What is your favorite game from BioWare?

A message from BioWare reflecting on their 30 years as a game studio, celebrating their legacy and the impact of their games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, while announcing the end of development on the next Mass Effect project.
